The distributed enterprise problem
Managing mission-critical servers and networks within the enterprise
data center or central office is hard enough. But managing distributed
infrastructure, diversely interconnected through the unsecured public
network, introduces a totally new layer of challenges. And ever
increasing regulatory and commercial pressures mean issues of security,
reliability, and serviceability for these sites at the edge of the
enterprise network have grown in importance for the IT manager.
No longer is treating remote sites as part of “hostile environment”
and limiting interconnection an option.
The solution
Opengear now offers a secure and affordable solution for remote
access to and remote control of these distributed sites. Enterprises
with hundreds (or thousands) of remote sites now have complete access
to their remote locations. A single CM4000 device with Secure Desktop
Tunneling at each site enables all the systems and network appliances
at these sites to be remotely managed through their consoles, or
through their graphical desktops.

In today’s down sized environment, there is growing management
awareness that while the average cost associated with server and
network hardware has decreased significantly over the past decade,
the overall IT costs have not declined … and a major contributor
is system administration costs which, as a percentage of total data
center cost, continue to rise. So the cost effectiveness of the
remote management solution needs close examination.
With a CM4000 solution, administrators can implement in-band and
out-of-band remote management for all their servers and network
devices without the complexity of installing an enterprise-wide
Virtual Private Network (VPN). In addition, this can be done without
the high costs that would have otherwise arisen when installing
legacy KVM over IP solutions from vendors such as Avocent and Raritan.
Opengear has leveraged open source software and the latest purpose
built hardware, to offer cost-effective quality solutions to be
used beyond the data center (in enterprise branch offices, campus
sites, retail outlets, schools, healthcare applications, industrial
control networks and a myriad of replicated sites).
