AlterPath™ Blade Manager
Blade Management
The AlterPath™ BladeManager is designed to address the need for secure, remote out-of-band access to the IBM® BladeCenter™.
The AlterPath BladeManager complements IBM Director by adding out-of-band access to and administration of blade servers from "bare metal"
and BIOS-level access to operating system (OS) level support for Windows®, Linux® and AIX®. In short, the AlterPath BladeManager provides
secure out-of-band access to up to 84 blade servers, 24 blade switches and 12 BladeCenter Management Modules.
When deploying IBM BladeCenter, the administrator is faced with the challenge of providing complete management access. The AlterPath BladeManager provides
granular access control to registered users to allow access to the serial console, KVM, power and virtual media interfaces. This allows administrator
access to the BladeCenter and the blade servers in any situation - from bare metal access and provisioning to system access even when the OS has crashed.
Security
A single sign on to the AlterPath BladeManager is authenticated locally in the AlterPath BladeManager, or can be authenticated using a central
authentication server supporting LDAP, RADIUS, Active Directory, TACACS+, NIS or Kerberos. Once authenticated, the user's security profile is
checked to ensure that the user is accessing the system at an authorized time and from a valid workstation. Access restriction can be defined
based on VLAN tags, source IP address or subnet.
Authorized users are then presented with a filtered list of blade servers and switch modules, which is controlled by the access control list.
According to the user's security profile, the user may then access each blade server using any authorized combination of serial console, KVM,
power control or virtual media.
All access to the blade servers is recorded in access logs, and in the case of serial console sessions all user interaction is recorded in a
centralized data log area.
Consolidation
The AlterPath BladeManager consolidates access of up to 6 BladeCenter chassis providing user access through a Web interface to 84 blade servers, 24 switch modules and 12 BladeCenter Management Modules.
Consolidated console access also includes offline data logging that records and stores console messages from preboot BIOS level through to OS level.
These logs are used by system administrators to diagnose problems and also to provide an audit trail. The AlterPath BladeManager also scans the data for
predefined errors or alert conditions and proactively notifies users of potential errors or problems providing for fast diagnosis and problem solving.
