AlterPath™
Biometric - Authentication Scanner
The AlterPath™ Bio is a biometric scanner that, when used
in conjunction with other AlterPath™; products, further enhances
remote access and management by adding another layer of protection
for system administrators managing critical network infrastructure.
It complements the set of security features present in AlterPath™
ACS console servers, the market reference for secure management
and the first to introduce data encryption and server-based authentication.
The AlterPath™ Bio is a portable USB device that combines
storage for security access keys with a fingerprint scanner in a
package that is small enough to be used as a key chain.
User authentication and security layering
Strong user authentication is one of the most important steps to
maintain security of the network infrastructure. The Bio enables
3-factor authentication in a way that is effective, inexpensive
and non-intrusive.
With good selection and management of passwords, user authentication
based solely on an access password (one-factor authentication) can
provide reasonable security for most common applications.
Applications that require more security can implement two-factor
authentication and require the presentation of a token or smart
card before granting access. SecureID and bank debit cards are two
examples of such devices. To gain unauthorized access to an account,
one would have to obtain both the password (something you know)
and the card (something you have).
System administrators managing critical network infrastructure requiring
an even higher level of authentication security can use biometric
authentication to create a three-factor authentication scheme.
Biometrics - Something you are
The use of a biometric sample (fingerprint image, iris or retina
scan, DNA sample, face geometry, etc.) makes authentication security
stronger because access is based not only on information and devices
that can be stolen, but also on something that is intrinsic to the
authorized user.
The AlterPath™ Bio is the solution that enhances authentication
in data center applications by working both as a token (something
you have) and a fingerprint scanner (something you are).
While the authentication security is highly desirable in data center
management, use of biometric scanning technology has been limited
by the high-cost of the authentication systems and by privacy concerns
related to the collection and maintenance of centralized databases
of biometric information.
The AlterPath™ Bio solution
Cyclades has implemented biometric technology in an innovative way
that addresses the earlier objections to use of biometrics in the
data center. It makes 3-factor authentication practical and affordable
for network access applications today.
There is no centralized database. The enrollment of the fingerprint
image is done by the user and stored in the Bio itself. During the
authentication process, the image stays at the access desktop and
is not transmitted over the network.
The AlterPath™ Bio uses biometric authentication as an additional
layer of security, without replacing or interfering with exisiting
authentication schemes. The fingerprint scan is fast, reliable,
convenient and extremely affordable.
Be sure only you can access the management ports of mission critical
servers and network infrastructure with AlterPath™ Bio.
