How in-line meters save our customer from a costly retrofit

Challenge:

Customer has recently built a data center using dumb power strips without any metering capability. But company’s upper management issued the mandate for energy conservation and as part of that, the data centers had to report on power consumption at the cabinet level. Customer did not want to retrofit all 350 power strips for metered with Ethernet strips.

Solution:

Given the customer’s requirements for just metering the in-feed of the cabinet power drops to the cabinets and their hesitancy to not un-rack and re-cable their existing power strips, Mirapath suggested using in-line meters to put in between the power drop and their existing power strips. These in-line meters can support up to 4 in-feeds per 1U unit.  

Using the in-line meters, the customer can reduce the total number of new strips necessary by a factor of 4. The hardware savings were 47%, not counting the man-power/labor time to un-rack, un-cable, re-rack and re-cable power connections.
