Type

Fiber cables come in 2 different cable types: Simplex and Duplex.

Simplex
Simplex fiber is a single fiber cable that allows for a single signal to be transferred one way.
Simplex cables are mainly used in the test environment/stage.

Duplex
Duplex cables consist of two fibers which allow for bi-directional transfer.
One fiber transmits data in one direction, while the other fiber transmits the data in the opposite direction.

Mode

Fiber cables come in 2 different cable modes: Single-mode, and Multi-mode.
Depending on the application, one would choose to either use single-mode or multi-mode fiber.

Single Mode (yellow)
Single mode fiber cables have a small glass core which allow for high speed data transmission over long distances.
Single mode fiber cables are also less susceptible to attenuation than multimode cables.

Multimode (orange)
Multimode fibers have larger cores and are able to carry more data than single mode fibers, but are more effective at shorter distances, due to their heightened attenuation levels.

Microns

Fiber cables come in a few different core sizes:
9/125, 50/125, and 62.5/125 Microns
Each core size serves a particular function.
As the data rate goes up, the distance that rate can be transmitted goes down.

9/125 Microns
9/125 Micron fiber cables are considered single-mode, allowing only a single wavelength of light to be transmitted through the cable.
9/125 Micron fiber is typically used in network connections over long lengths.

50/125 Microns and 62.5/125 Microns
50/125 Micron multimode fiber allows high, low, and normal order modes of signal transfer between the fiber ends.
50/125 Micron is one of the more widely used micron sizes amongst data networks
