How to choose the right server rack
The server rack/cabinet is the cornerstone of a state of the art data center and lab. Choosing the right rack will not only make the difference in how the data center looks, but it will also positively impact the server network gear deployment process, promote good airflow, ease of equipment moves, and help with security initiatives.
Because we know that choosing the wrong rack can be costly, we have put together some of the most common requirements that need to be taken into consideration when selecting a rack enclosure for your data center or lab.

Here are some common things to consider when selecting a rack:
| Dimensions |
- Height
How tall do you need the rack to be? 42U, 45U, 48U or even taller? Customers are increasing the density of racks pushing the limit on rack space.
- Width
24" wide has been the standard but with the increased cabling and presence of power strips, a wider rack might be more suitable at 28", 30" or even at 32" wide.
- Depth
Is 40" deep sufficient or 42" deep?
|
| |
| Weight Capacity |

- What is the weight capacity of the rack?
- How is the rack built?
- Is it aluminum or steel?
- Is it a welded frame?
- What is the static weight load versus moving weight load?
- Is there seismic version of the rack?
Depending on the application, the construction of rack is crucial.
|
| |
| Mounting Options |
|
For power strips:
- Is there space to mount vertical power strips?
- Does the rack come with recessed button mount panels?
- Does the rack offer different mounting bracket options?
The ability to easily mount a vertical power strip is one detail that is often overlooked causing power strips to block rails or strips to be mounted with velcro straps or having to reinvent a mounting bracket.
|
| |
| Cable Management Options |
- Does the rack come with cable management channels?
- Does it come with various different cable management options so there is flexibility in cable management?
- Are there openings in the roof and floor to feed cables?
- Are the openings large enough for 50 Amps, 60 Amps power plugs to run through it?
- Are there brush openings to minimize airflow issues?
|
| |
| Other Physical Considerations |
- Is there flexibility on how the rack is delivered such as different types of door and side panels?
- How easy is it to remove side panels, front and rear doors and put them back on?
- How is the grounding done?
- How are two racks bayed together?
- Are the rails adjustable?
- 10/32 round, threaded, unthreaded, or square holes?
- Casters and/or leveling feet?
- Physical security of the racks – types of locks available.
- Color of the rack? (white vs black)
- Available shelves?
- Are customizations and branding options available?
- How is the rack packed and shipped?
- Does the rack come with a crate for re-shipment?
|
| |
| Availability of racks from supplier |
- Are the racks normally readily available?
- What is the standard lead time for delivery?
- Some rack manufacturers have the racks available ready to ship, some only have certain part numbers that are readily available.
- Other manufacturers have lead time ranging from 5 days to 5 weeks.
